Ginger can make a great festive treat

Come up with alternative recipes for Christmas

Diners up and down the country will no doubt be piling into restaurants with the expectation of being able to enjoy something particularly special from the Christmas menu.

While many restaurants are likely to have had their set menus locked in place for some time now, it is not too late to come up with a few extra surprises.

In an article for the Independent, celebrity chef Mark Hix suggested serving Christmas thins, claiming that they are great to present on a table after the end of a classic festive meal.

They can also be served as a dessert option - and these chocolatey treats are not dissimilar from after dinner mints.

However, there is more scope for innovation here.

Indeed, Mr Hix suggested adding a ginger flavouring - but truly adventurous caterers could try something of their own creation.

Chilli chocolate would be an unusual novelty - or cinnamon and vanilla are classic sweet ingredients.
