Cinnamon is essential for a toffee banana loaf

Cinnamon is a key ingredient in this loaf

Culinary herbs and spices can offer something new to a wide range of recipes, so they really are a very useful staple for caterers to keep in the kitchen.

Indeed, our resident expert Chef Steve says this kind of versatility - combined with the fact that they can add something to everything from starters to deserts - is one of his favourite things about the ingredients.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, Rose Prince, author of such cookbooks as The New English Kitchen and The New English Table, recommended a toffee banana loaf.

She said that: "Banana loaf is comparable to sausages, in that one person’s favourite is never like that of another."

Her version of the dish was described as "golden, fudgy and decadent" and included cinnamon among its ingredients.

However, why not bring your own unique twist to the meal by adding some flavour pairings of your own? Vanilla could be effective.
