Food waste caused by preparing and serving too much

Cooks of adventurous recipes could afford to be conservative with the amount of food they prepare, according to one expert.

Speaking on the BBC Farming Today podcast, Emma Marsh of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign pointed out that more food is currently produced than ever before.

Ms Marsh claimed that we now waste 25 per cent of the food we purchase.

"We are either cooking, preparing and serving too much, or we are letting food go off by not using it in time," she explained.

She said that over 16 million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK, more than half of which comes from households.

Some of the reasons she attributed to the waste included greater consumer choice and affluence, but lack of knowledge of the effect of food waste.

The Love Food Hate Waste campaign aims to increase awareness of this problem by providing tips on how individuals can reduce their personal impact.
