Spices used in recipe for hot cross buns

Hot cross buns could be the perfect Easter treat

With Easter just around the corner, many people may be interested in some recipe ideas for hot cross buns.

Writing for the Weekend Telegram, Cynthia Stone gave instructions on how to make the traditional spring treats.

As well as sugar, yeast, butter, flour, milk and an egg, spices are added to the mix to give the buns some extra flavour.

Ground cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are all required, as are ground cloves and allspice.

Currants and sugared fruits are also added, while an icing can be made from melted butter, icing sugar, vanilla, milk and lemon juice.

Ms Stone stated that although she often looks for hot cross bun recipes that do not require the dough to be kneaded, she can never find any that produce good results.

There are many sweet dishes that call for the use of spices and last week, Caroline Lubbers described in an article for the blog Whipped how to make spiced butter cookies that can be fashioned into the shape of a mouse.
