Spices may help in weight loss

Some spices may promote fat loss

Culinary spices may help overweight people to drop the pounds even faster, according to Dr Tanupol Virunhagarun, a senior physician and assistant international medical director at Bumrungrad Hospital.

He explains that chilli peppers that can boost the metabolism, while turmeric contains a chemical which is thought to limit the body's absorption of fat.

Simple black pepper can increase the energy required to digest food, thus cutting down on calories.

Cinnamon, he says, is thought to lower the body's blood sugar level, making it especially helpful to those with diabetes.

"Many herbs and spices - especially the hottest, spiciest ones - are known to enhance the body's metabolism processes and help promote fat loss," Dr Virunhagarun wrote in the Bangkok Post.

"Most of these herbs and spices are inexpensive and easy to find."

Dr Virunhagarun also recommended ginger for joint pains, adding that it "causes tissues to consume more energy and burn more calories".
