Expert discusses health benefits of spices

Many spices contain anti oxidants

Culinary spices could be the perfect addition to any meal if people are keen to lose some weight and eat healthily.

Speaking to the Now, registered Choices Markets dietician Nicole Fetterly said these substances are full of antioxidants, which can have numerous health benefits.

In particular, she highlighted turmeric as being particularly useful, especially because it has anti-inflammation properties.

While cumin is a great source of iron with a "wonderful aroma", the expert recommended nutmeg due to its high levels of potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus.

Ms Fetterly also discussed the benefits of cinnamon.

"It's a great one to think about adding to your morning cereal or on to your toast to help slow the absorption of sugar from starches and keep your blood sugar on a lower curve," she stated.

These comments come after the Forres Gazette noted that spices add flavour to food and can therefore help dieters to fight their cravings for fatty, unhealthy meals.
