A member of the mint family, the oregano has a robust aromatic flavour.
Uses in the Kitchen
Oregano has an aromatic, warm and slightly bitter flavour which gives the character of a lot of Italian dishes, is essential in Greek cuisine but also widely used in Mexican, Spanish and Caribbean cuisines.
Mix with ripe plum tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and basil leaves for a tasty Bruschetta topping. Sprinkle into Italian pasta sauces when making Bolognese, Lasagne, Carbonara etc
Origins
In Greek 'Oregano' means 'Joy of the mountains'.
Oregano was popular in ancient Egypt and Greece as a flavoring for vegetables, wines, meats and fish.
