Buying fresh ingredients local

Once your cupboards are stocked with an array of culinary spices, you can start thinking about fresh fruit, veg and meat.
And undoubtedly one of the best ways to ensure quality is to buy local.

Small scale food retailers that source their produce from your local stomping ground have a certain amount of accountability, which engenders quality.

Find the right places and you will be buying the best beef brisket, the tastiest handmade tagliatelle and juiciest juniper berries.

Celebrating local produce will be a key theme at this year's Tynemouth Food Festival, which will take place on May 12th and 13th.

Chair of the event's organising committee Sally Craigen told the Newcastle Journal: "There is a smorgasbord of treats in store and we hope the public will accept our invitation to come into our village to enjoy the mix of sights, sounds, aromas and tastes that will be conjured up by so many fine foods, drinks and culinary skills gathered in one place."

Food fans will be able to watch cookery demonstrations, sample the finest of ingredients, have a beer or two and even enter cookery competitions.
