Turmeric to have medicinal benefits

Turmeric may have medicinal benefits

Turmeric could be used in a drug that helps to fight against the damaged caused by strokes.

This is according to researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, who are about to start trialling a medicine derived from the curry spice after preliminary tests proved positive.

Scientists at the facility modified one of turmeric's components, curcumin, so it can pass the blood brain barrier, which the body uses to block potentially toxic molecules from reaching the brain.

During tests in rabbits, the drug was found to reduce muscle and movement problems and Dr Sharlin Ahmed of the Stroke Association welcomed the news, stating: "This is the first significant research to show that turmeric could be beneficial to stroke patients by encouraging new cells to grow."

Other herbs and spices can also be useful for those who want to improve their diet in the new year.

Writing for Penn Live, Diane Harris noted they can be used as a substitute for salt.
