Spices can replace butter and salt in dishes

Spices can be used in a variety of dishes

Herbs and spices are great for adding flavour to recipes without resorting to ingredients such as butter or salt.

This is according to Cathy Kenny, writing for Braintree Patch, who explained that one of her new year's resolution is to eat better and cook meals "that don't contain as many fattening ingredients".

Introducing spices to a dish is one of the "easiest ways to accomplish this", Ms Kenny observed, but she urged people wanting to add to their spice rack to shop around, as prices can vary considerably and a wide range of condiments will be needed by those who are looking to improve their diet in 2011.

Her comments follow similar advice from Becky Crawford, writing for Auburnpub.com, who said black pepper, garlic powder, basil and ginger are just some of the spices that do a good job of replacing the flavour of salt as they all have "bite".
