Herbs and spices could add flavour to pupils soups

Herbs and spices can help bring out the flavour of soup

Yesterday (January 26th) pupils at Auchenblae Primary School competed to create the best healthy soup under an Apprentice-style task.

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) revealed the students had to use locally grown produce and be aware of the nutritional value of ingredients, as well as giving reasons why they decided to use certain items.

Many of the participants may have added herbs and spices to provide extra flavour to their dishes and such ingredients particularly work well in soups.

Pupils were also asked to deliver ideas for packaging and to promote and market their creations.

"We hope this project will provide inspiration for other schools to undertake a cross-curricular project linked to food and health, which is completely in line with the Curriculum for Excellence," commented knowledge exchange manager at the Rowett Institute for Nutrition and Health Sue Bird.

The FDF represents the UK's food and drink industry, which is the country's biggest manufacturing sector.
