Pasta named the worlds favourite food

Pasta is the worlds favourite food

Pasta has been crowned the world's favourite food in a new survey carried out in 17 countries by aid group Oxfam.

The study showed that the dish has become a staple part of many people's diets, whether eaten with light green pesto or a spicy tomato sauce made with arrabbiata seasoning.

It beat meat, rice, pizza, chicken and fish to take the top spot. Perhaps not surprisingly, Italy was found to be the biggest consumer of pasta, followed by Venezuela.

Jim Winship from the UK's Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association, told the BBC that the versatility of pasta and the endless possibilities for inspirational recipes is what makes it so popular.

"You can create lots of different dishes with it," he explained. "It tastes good and it's filling. It also has a long shelf life, so you can keep it I the larder until you need to put a meal together."

Also speaking to the broadcaster, Italian restaurateur Antonio Carluccio said he does not know a single person who does not like pasta.

"It is very similar to bread," he remarked. "Both are made with flour and water and they both need an accompaniment."
