Chef highlights mustard as a store cupboard staple

Mustard with real bite has been highlighted as a kitchen essential by one chef

Cooks, chefs and people who simply like to experiment with culinary herbs and spices in the kitchen should not be without a jar of English mustard.

This is the advice of chef and owner of Bentley's Sea Grill Richard Corrigan, who told the Independent it is one of his store cupboard staples.

He said he regularly uses it just to add bite to something as simple as cold cuts of ham.

"I love it when the heat hits the roof of your mouth and makes your eyes water," Mr Corrigan explained.

The expert recommended having horseradish on hand too as a complement to beef - although he said fresh is best, our resident expert Chef Steve often uses the Schwartz Horseradish Sauce for speed and convenience.

Horseradish sauce also goes great with smoked mackerel if you want something with a little more bite.

When asked what his desert island dish would be, Mr Corrigan said he would choose collar of bacon, summer cabbage and English mustard to remind him of his home in Ireland.
