Add cinnamon to French toast

Cinnamon can sweeten dishes

There are many ways in which professional caterers can bring their own unique twist to a classic dish - it is simply a question of taking an imaginative approach to innovation.

Our resident expert Chef Steve says that one of the easiest ways to do this is by trying different combinations of culinary herbs and spices.

In an article for the Daily Telegraph, celebrity chef Xanthe Clay suggested a caramelised cinnamon spin on French toast, serving with russet apple and raspberry compote.

She claimed that the cinnamon gives the toast a crisp crust and deep flavour that is not too tough, while the compote is nicely festive.

Her method of preparation involved first cooking the apples in a small pan with a vanilla pod.

However, if you really want to bring your own unique twist to the meal, why not try coming up with something of your own creation? Simply remember Chef Steve's advice and don't be afraid to let your imagination run wild.
