Combine tradition with innovation this Christmas

Would you deep fry a mince pie

Is Christmas the time to come up with exciting new ideas for traditional recipes, such as introducing a new range of Asian spices to the mix?

James Ramsden doesn't seem to think so.

Writing in an article for the Guardian, the chef - whose first cookbook is due for publication in the new year - he said Christmas is the one time of the year when innovation is unwelcome.

It was noted celebrity chef Ashley Palmer-Watts is deep-frying mince pies for a festive charity cook-off.

Mr Ramsden said these turned out to be delicious despite his prior scepticism and tasted of mandarin, but remained adamant the seasonal traditions are best left untainted.

"Food absolutism is a terrible thing [but at Christmas] there's too much to think about, too many people to disappoint," he commented.

Chefs who have been planning to offer new dishes over the festive season might want to revisit their strategy and ensure they have at least one festive classic such as turkey on the menu.

Jamie Oliver recently claimed this kind of variety is often welcomed by diners.
