Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the sandwich

Sandwiches celebrate a landmark anniversary in 2012

Over the course of the next 12 months, caterers could find they encounter a wide range of new flavour ideas for the sandwich.

The British Sandwich Association is marking the 250th anniversary of the iconic food and the campaign is expected to build momentum throughout 2012.

A logo has been produced especially for the occasion and it will be reproduced on point-of-sale display stands, in addition to food packaging.

However, there is no reason chefs cannot take advantage of the ongoing event to come up with some new recipes.

Mark Hix, owner of the Hix Oyster & Chop House in London, recently suggested preparing a ham joint studded with culinary spices such as cloves in an article for the Independent.

This could make several rounds of sandwiches, so why not come up with a new take on a luxurious version of this light bite to serve your diners?

Do you have any inspirational recipes that riff on the classic formula?
