Herbs can create a distinctive Lebanese salad

One of the great things about culinary herbs and spices is the fact that they can be used to add character to almost any dish.

Our resident expert Chef Steve says one of his key professional inspirations is researching the culinary traditions of other cultures - so why not combine these approaches to meal preparation?

In an article for the Guardian, chef patron at Murano restaurant and consultant at the Whitechapel Gallery and Dining Room in London Angela Hartnett recommended a fattoush salad recipe.

This is characterised by its inclusion of crunchy vegetables and citrus notes - and can be served with a crisp, fried pitta bread.

It includes parsley and mint and is inspired by the culinary traditions of Lebanon - but don't be afraid to try something new by coming up with your own combination of flavours.
