Organic produce ignored by shoppers

Consumers are seemingly shunning organic produce

Many shoppers often ignore organic produce when searching for ingredients, despite the benefits such foods offer, one expert has noted.

Organic vegetables and other foodstuffs can be used as the basis of many recipe ideas, however spokeswoman for the Soil Association Georgia Catt said organic food currently only accounts for around two per cent of sales in the overall grocery market.

"Given that many consumers are now looking for cheap food, organic is often overlooked and it is critical to keep promoting the message as often as possible," she said.

People who have yet to use organic produce in their chicken recipes or other dishes may find September is an ideal time to do so, as Ms Catt stated many retailers will be running price promotions on products.

One reason for the low sales of organic ingredients may be the increase in the number of people growing their own produce.

Research conducted by Which? last month revealed 24 per cent of individuals are cultivating vegetables rather than purchasing them from retailers.
