Spices have health benefits while adding flavour says author

Spices have a number of healthy properties

Culinary spices are perfect for those who wish to add some "zing" to their food, it has been claimed.

Writing for Lake News Online, Anita Marlay explained that without the flavourings, meals would be bland while lacking colour and fragrance.

However, many spices also have a number of health benefits that people could take advantage of as well as enhancing their dishes.

Ms Marlay stated that while cinnamon can lower fasting blood sugar levels and cholesterol among those with type 2 diabetes, saffron has antioxidative effects.

She recommended coriander for the benefits it can have for the digestive system, while ginger can be used to treat stomach problems and gastrointestinal distress.

For those who like something a little sweeter, the author stated: "Nutmeg is said to have antidepressant-like activity. Sprinkle on ice cream, coffee or cocoa."

This advice comes after registered Choices Markets dietician Nicole Fetterly told the Now that turmeric is known for its anti-inflammation properties.
